A major heavy electrical equipment manufacturer within the Sumitomo Group, ranking fifth in the industry. Founded in 1897 as a privately run electrical machinery factory, Meidensha's original business was motors. Established in 1917, the company manufactures generators, substation equipment, railway-related equipment, electronic devices, and information equipment. It also provides services such as engineering, operations, and maintenance. Demand is high for the government and public sector.


The company excels in contracted maintenance of substation equipment and monitoring systems for water supply and sewerage systems, and water purification plants. It is the leading manufacturer of testing equipment for automotive development in Japan. The company co-owns the high-rise building in front of JR Osaki Station, which is the former site of the company's head office and factory.
